The Glass-blower’s Breath
By Carl Eric Robbins, June 12, 2013
By my side a candle burns,
In my hand a pencil turns,
Crumpled pages gather at my feet,
Nothing I can use on a single sheet!
It’s not enough to say I love her,
Or that her eyes hold the mysteries of my world,
But she brought sunlight to where I dwelt in darkness, “
And I just need to find the words. “
I’ll find the words, I’ll find a way,
My heart knows what it means to say,
The way the scent of wild roses
Makes me want to pull her down, down by the ocean.
When I was storm-tossed she came to me,
Swift and sure on a rolling sea,
With her heart full of wonder,
Riding blazing fire and thunder!
I’ll find the words, I’ll find a way,
My heart knows what it means to say,
I can’t find my way to sleep,
When she lingers like honey on my lips.
It’s not enough to say I love her,
Or that her smile holds the brilliance of my world,
But she brought sunlight to where I dwelt in darkness,
And I just need to find the words.
All the poets that have burned my tongue,
All the songs that can’t be calmly sung,
Never touched me with the certainty
Of how her spirit reaches into me.
I’ll find the words, I’ll find a way,
My heart knows what it means to say,
For her I’d surely smash the glass,
And fall toward the glass-blower’s breath.

Magic in the Moonlight
By Eric Robbins copyright June 2013
Capo 2
When the moon steals through my window,
And she paints my Lady Love,
Just a curve of hip and one bare breast,
Then I thank the gods above.
Oh, there’s magic in the moonlight,
When lovers sleep
With just a sheet
And a glass of water sweating by the bedside!
We move together while the fireflies
Give a silent midnight show.
The summer heat lies thick right through sunrise,
But still we hold each other close.
Oh, there’s magic in the moonlight,
When lovers sleep
With just a sheet
And a glass of water sweating by the bedside!
Life’s a mystery but I know this:
There are days that treat me rough,
But I can wake her now for one more kiss,
And that’s much more than enough!
Oh, there’s magic in the moonlight,
When lovers sleep
With just a sheet
And a glass of water sweating by the bedside!

Snow Drift Love
by Carl Eric Robbins, June 2012
The way the snow drifts,
On and on and on…
Made me think of
A shape for this new song…
Falling past the window,
Blanketing the yard…
Paper said it’s bound to
Come down mighty hard…
Tiny changes in the shape of all the snow…
But underneath is still the front yard we know…
That’s the way our love grows,
Building slowly like these all-night snows.
Underneath it all, just like our dooryard,
Never changing since I fell so hard
For you, that’s what you do to my heart!
When we woke up,
Pulled the drapes aside…
Watched the first flakes
Building like the tide…
And then we pulled all the
Covers to our chins…
Sipping tea and loving
Being all snowed in…
All the edges gradually shift,
Under swirling shapes of growing drifts…

Snapping Sails

Snapping Sails
by Eric Robbins, May, 2013
When I was a younger man I left to sail the seas, and
I told my father, well, I can’t say the reason,
But something’s calling me across the far horizon
And I’ll find it or I’ll die!
Snapping sails, rolling seas
Broaching whales, all called to me
Nights on deck with a shared mug of wine,
But none of these were what I sailed to find.
Once I asked the captain what he looked for in his roaming,
He said sometimes he rounds Cape Horn, sailing back from Nome,
And then it’s all downwind from there until he plants his boots at home,
And that’s all he said when I asked why.
Many years are gone now since the day I first departed,
And I’ve wondered why I journeyed off the edge of every chart,
But the day I found my reason was the day I lost my heart
To a lady who has oceans in her eyes.

Beloved Love
By Carl Eric Robbins, June 2012
Can it be that each of us,
Hearts battered but unbroken,
Finally found the one who was
The dream we dreamt unspoken?
Beloved love, wake to me,
I hear you speaking in your dreams,
Asking all the spirits round us
Why does dawn come?
Every time I wake to find you
Sleepy-eyed, my arms around you
Waiting for your gaze to meet mine
I thank them!
While we slept the candle danced
And guttered by the door,
Every flicker’s random chance
A cry for just one more!
Something more than me or you,
Some goddess, wise spirit,
Brought me more than I am due,
The wonder that I’m holding!

Cup of Bliss
By Carl Eric Robbins, July 2013
Capo 2
Blackbirds fly out from my fingers
While I’m singing,
Oh, I swear I’ve not been drinking!
Still, the rattle on my strings
Of night-time notes by urgent wings
Keeps me from sinking.
I don’t know where we’ll be tomorrow.
We’re not to read ahead, but I know this:
We found a way to empty out a cup of sorrow,
And share instead a cup of bliss.
With my back against the ash-tree,
Playing softly
I can feel its roots engulf me.
I recall the time you asked me
When will we get through the past we
Shared. I’m afraid I answered roughly.
I find a pen and light a candle,
Rumpled pages
My life-cycle chronicled in stages,
I rise to clouds, then rain again. I’ll
Keep my seat, the tiller handle
Tightly held while the current rages.
